One Response to “Torrey Pines Murders: The Unsolved Homicides of Barbara Nantais and Claire Hough”

I was 22 at the time of these murders, I was an avid surfer down in the Torrey Pines / Blacks Beach area every summer. However we were always cautioned to stay away from the nearby Sunset Cliffs just south of Torrey Pines. Due to the illegal aliens that migrate up from Mexico. I personally never saw anything when I was camping down there but I do remember it was shortly after that crime that the “Orange Bag” Freeway murders got underway. their targets were male surfers hitch hiking up and down Coast Hwy. I hitch hiked quite a bit during those days, but it was the Orange Bag murders that ended it for me. Most of our campouts were at the northern end of San Clemente at Trestles / San Onfre State Beach. I was a Long Beach Resident at the time. I used to surf on occasion with Jim Alt just in means of passing when we saw each other in the water. So this crime hit home quite hard, especially for his girlfriend. I defied my parents one time they were going away for the weekend and decided to pack up the VW Van and some buddies and I headed for Torrey Pines, back in the day you parked up in the residential area and walked to the nearest cliff and figured out which one of the many climbing lines looked safest, as you could see where prior lines snapped and the decenders probably met their fate. But we did the 300′ straight down climb with board and Ice Chest in hand. at that time there was a sign on the beach that stated ” Bathing Suits Optional Beyond this point” Nude to the North and Prude to the south, the Nude portion was the Blacks Beach National Seashore where the continental shelf dropped off at the most 100 yards offshore it went from 3 to 10 feet to a drop down well below 1000 feet that is what made the waves so perfect. It is also where I used to run into Robert Englund (Freddy Kruger) nightmare on Elm Street. he was a Laguna Beach (Salt Creek ) local but once in a while I used to find him down at the Torrey Pines / Scripts / Blacks Beach area. These poor victims were friends of mine and it was sooo sad that this whole thing happened. regardless if the girlfriend defied her parents orders, someone was going to die that weekend. That is my recollection of the Life and Times of the summer surf tours to the border.

My heart goes out to the families and friends of the victims and I pray for all of the fallen surfers I have had the privilege to know. All of that 60′s 70′s 80′s surf crowd were some of the best, honest and genuine individuals I ever have known.

    With that said
    God Bless
    Rob
