The murder of seven year-old Heaven Sutton on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, makes me wonder just what in the hell Chicago is waiting for to declare marital law on gangs.
Heaven and her mother Ashkae Banks were just closing up a lemonade and candy stand in front of their North Luna Avenue home in Chicago’s West Side when two gunmen fired into the crowd on the sidewalk.
Heaven was shot in the back as she turned to run home. She was later pronounced dead at Loyola University Medical Center. A 19 year-old boy standing nearby suffered a knee wound but is expected to okay.
Chicago police say their investigation has revealed the shootings were the result of gang conflict and have identified the two gangs likely involved but no arrests have been made as of this writing.
The saddest part of this story, however, is Heaven Sutton‘s death came just days before she and her family were to take a vacation at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The little girl had long anticipated the trip and had, just before the shooting, her hair styled for the occasion.
My heart breaks for Heaven’s family. As the mother of a child Heaven’s same age who eagerly counts down the days to our own Disney World vacation, I am outraged and disgusted that street punks killed a LITTLE GIRL in the name of their gangs. I’m sure the gunfire wasn’t intended for her but any half-witted jackass knows if you fire a gun into a crowd where there is children, there is a possibility you’ll hit, even KILL, one of them.
And as of 2011, there is not even a death penalty in Illinois which would allow for the “euthanasia” of a couple of guys who shouldn’t be taking up good oxygen.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel, I want to know, when are you going to step away from the cameras with your tough talk and call in the National Guard to do what should have been done with Chicago a long time go: rid the city of gangs. Young, old, black, white, latino – I don’t care. Gangs are trouble – BIG TROUBLE – and they are taking over Chicgo at a frightening rate!
A 7 year-old little girl who was selling candy and drinks on the sidewalk will never see Cinderella’s Castle or hear the happy voices of children singing It’s A Small World in five languages because of worthless gang trash.
Just how many more times do innocent people have to die? DECLARE MARTIAL LAW NOW! You did it for NATO, why not for the safety your own citizens?

A 26-year-old alleged gang member has been charged with the fatal shooting of Heaven Sutton, the 7-year-old girl who was selling candy with her mother near her North Austin neighborhood home moments before a stray bullet struck her in the back last week.
Jerrell Dorsey, of the 1600 block of North Laramie Avenue, was charged with first degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm and was ordered held with no bond by Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. in bond court Sunday, police said.
