Missing Monday: Dawn Marlene Allen of Carroll, Iowa

Dawn Marlene AllenFor 21 years, Dawn Marlene Allen had worked at the Carroll, Iowa, Subway without ever having missed a day nor being late. So when the 50 year-old woman failed to show up at work on the morning of May 5, 2011, her boss was very concerned and immediately contacted police after being unable to reach Dawn by phone.

Investigators determined Dawn was last seen near her home around 8:30 p.m. the previous evening. Later in the day her disappearance was reported, Dawn’s 2001 Chevrolet Blazer was found locked and abandoned at The Piranha Club at 1215 Plaza Drive in Carroll. Interviews with club staff revealed the car had not been in the lot when the club closed at 10:30 p.m. the previous evening.

Detectives attempted to locate Dawn by tracing calls on her cell phone. They learned the phone was last used around 3:30 a.m. on the morning of May 5 then turned off or the battery died just a few hours later.

At the time of her disappearance, Dawn was in the process of a divorce but friends and family say it was amicable. Dawn had began dating James F. Snovelle, a married man who had falsely claimed to be separated from his wife at the time he and Dawn met.

Investigators felt strongly Snovelle played a role in disappearance or would have information helpful in locating her and sought him for questioning. When officers approached him on May 9, 2001, in Coffey County, Kansas, he committed suicide by shooting himself. Following this event, detectives learned from one of Snovelle’s brother he had claimed something bad was going to happen about a month before his suicide.

Although Snovelle had no history of violence, investigators believe he is responsible for Dawn’s disappearance and likely homicide as she had never been reported to suffer any mental illness or any difficulties in life that would have warranted her in voluntarily walking away. This belief was only reaffirmed when Dawn’s adult son suddenly passed away only eight months later and she never appeared for his funeral. Friends and family say Dawn this would be out of character for the mother and grandmother.
