True Crime Quiz: Famous Crime Scenes of Tennessee

Posted by Kim Cantrell on September 21, 2012

I want to thank you for the fantastic response to the Famous (And Not So) Crime Scenes quiz! So, as requested by a few of you, I’m going to offer quizzes by state – and what better one to start with than my own, right?

The following are famous (and not so) crime scenes from across Tennessee. Enjoy!

West Tennessee

* On March 22, 2006, congregants of the Fourth Street Church of Christ discovered their preachers body in this home in Selmer, Tennessee. Who was convicted of his murder in April 2007?

Show answer
Mary Winkler murdered her husband, Church of Christ Preacher Matthew Winkler, and then fled to Alabama with her three daughters. During the trial she claimed mental, emotional, and physical abuse but prosecutors said she murdered Matt to keep him from finding out about their thousands of dollars negative balance at the bank.

The Winkler case was chronicled in The Pastor\\\\\\\'s Wife: The True Story of a Minister and the Shocking Death that Divided a Family by Diane Fanning and in the Lifetime movie by the same title.

* The Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee, was the assassination site for which civil rights leader on April 4, 1968?

Show answer
Official history says that James Earl Ray assassinated Martin Luther King, Jr. as he spoke to a crowd of civil rights activist on the balcony of the Lorraine Hotel, which now serves as a civil rights history museum. However, William F. Pepper proclaims darker forces were at work that April 1968 day and Ray is innocent of the crime in the 1998 book Orders To Kill.

* St. Marys Catholic Church became a murder scene on May 15, 1981, with the death of Father John Jay Jackson who had offered assistance to his killer Laron Ronald Williams. Where is this church located?

Show answer
On May 14, 1981, Father John Jay Jackson of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Jackson was approached by Laron Ronald Williams for food and clothing aide. Father Jackson fulfilled Williams request only to be murdered for his good deeds. Father Jackson and the subsequent death of police sergeant Clarence P. Cox is detailed in Robert Dailey's book Jackson: The True Story.
